Tom Pidcock takes on snow and Wout Van Aert in Val di Sole

06 dicembre 2021 - 11:05

Curiosity sparkles in the words of the MTB Olympic Champion ahead of the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup stage in Vermiglio (Trentino, Italy, December 11-12). Expectation rises for a possible duel between the Brit and the Belgian champion, rivals also in the road season

Through his young career, Tom Pidcock has snown excellent adaptation skills on all bikes and cycling disciplines. In a few days, such capacity will be on call once again as he faces a snow-covered cyclo-cross track in Vermiglio (Val di Sole, Trentino, Northern Italy).

Expectations and curiosity are growing every day for the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup stage in Val di Sole (December 11-12). Built in the San Leonardo Lakes area, Vermiglio’s course will be an absolute novelty for the riders. “I think it’s going to be cold - said Pidcock - but I’m not too sure of what to expect. It’s certainly going to be the first snow race I’ve ever done. I won the JR World Championships in Luxembourg when it was icy, but not in the snow”.

After an unforgettable season with wins both on the road (Brabantse Pijl) and in mountain biking (Olympic gold medal), the 22-year-old rider born in Leeds is now back to racing in cyclocross. “My condition is good. I need to start work on my top end, but I’m excited to get going in the season and get racing. The race fitness will come with racing. I hope to find myself near the front, which will allow me to enjoy the race”.

Val di Sole’s fans hope for an exciting head-to-head between Pidcock and Wout Van Aert, also rivals in the 2021 road season: the images of the Amstel Gold Race, won by Van Aert over Pidcock in a nail-biting sprint finish, are still vivid in people's mind, and Val di Sole could offer Pidcock a chance to challenge the Belgian for another big win.

Seventh in his cyclo-cross season debut in the Superprestige stage in Boom (Belgium), won by Wout Van Aert, Pidcock has a clear mind on the Val di Sole’s favorites. “It will be technical, so it could be Wout Van Aert, or Eli Iserbyt, who's not by chance the World Cup leader so far."

The Val di Sole races’ program, which only features Men and Women’s Elite competitions, will develop over two days: Saturday, December 11th, and Sunday, December 12th.
