Mitterwallner, Stigger, Kolb and Höll: the Austrian fab four ready for Val di Sole

26 giugno 2023 - 10:37

The Austria MTB movement stands out as a thriving force in the international Cross Country and Downhill disciplines, despite its modest population of 9 million. Notably, Austrian riders are poised to participate in the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup stage in Val di Sole, with strong prospects in 4 out of the 12 scheduled races

Slovenia may be renowned as the land of champions in road cycling, but when it comes to Mountain Bike racing, Switzerland has proudly claimed the spotlight as the Nation that has made the sport its own in spite of its relatively small land.

However, in recent years, the Austrian National Team has embarked on a remarkable journey in the MTB discipline, achieving commendable results despite a modest population of just 9 million. From rising stars Mona Mitterwallner and Laura Stigger in Cross Country to the talented Andreas Kolb and Valentina Höll in Downhill, the Austrian riders are set to make their mark at the upcoming UCI Mountain Bike World Cup event in Val di Sole, Trentino, Northern Italy, from June 29th to July 2nd. Their chances of securing victories in four of the twelve scheduled races are high.

Daolasa is situated just a two-hour drive from the Austrian border at the Brenner Pass, hence the event presents a unique opportunity for Austrian fans to rally behind their favorite riders. On Friday, June 30th, all eyes will be on Mona Mitterwallner and Laura Stigger as they take center stage in the Elite Women Short Track. Laura Stigger, who emerged victorious in the first Short Track race of the 2023 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup season in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic, has shown her prowess in this discipline, while Mitterwallner's strengths lie in longer distances.

The excitement continues on Saturday, July 1st, as Valentina Höll and Andreas Kolb, following their astounding wins in their home race in Leogang, enter the Downhill race as favorites. Kolb, last year's runner-up in Val di Sole during the 2022 UCI World Cup Great Finale, faces stiff competition from Loris Vergier, while Höll, alongside Camille Balance and French rider Myriam Nicole, is considered one of the top contenders in the Women's Race.

"I'm thrilled to return to Val di Sole. Last year was a true test of my skills, and I can't wait to tackle this year's track. The venue holds a special place in my heart, and I'm eager to witness the track changes. One of my goals this season is to excel here in Val di Sole," expressed Downhill World Champion Valentina Höll.

On the final day, Sunday, July 2nd, all eyes will once again be on Mitterwallner and Stigger as they compete in the Cross Country race. Following their impressive second and third-place finishes in the last World Cup stage in Leogang, anticipation runs high for their performance.

"Val di Sole 2021 holds beautiful memories for me, as it was where I won the U23 World Championship. Returning to Val di Sole brings about positive feelings, as I thoroughly enjoy racing in Italy. My goal is to claim the top spot and give it my all," explained Mona Mitterwallner.
